Writers Block? No problem!

Image result for writers block

What do you do when the dreaded WB hits? Many authors dread it, their little agile fingers tap feverishly in the hope that the momentum stays, the flow gets stronger, and their fingers are as tired at the end of the day as their brain...but then it happens...

The creative juices begin to dry and as you sense it happening panic sets in which seems to feed the speed of the impending doom that is lack of thought, clarity, and direction.

We cry, freak-out, throw things, cuss, and it changes nothing. The well is dry and all feels lost.
Do not fret! It has happened to many of us and will continue to happen for as long as a person takes a seat and attempts to put thought to paper (so to speak). There are things that you can do to try and avoid it, some of those things work and some don't. Below I have listed one or two that you could try should the dreaded BLOCK hit:

  • Go for a walk (personally, I find this one to be a great help)
  • Eliminate distractions (create a writing space, a place where you can write in peace).
  • Read a book (many authors do not like to do this for fear that subconsciously they will retain the information and they will accidentally include it in their own work...I assure this will not happen. Reading is a great way to stir up those creative juices and in my eyes, it kills two birds with one stone. You get to read a great book and you get your imagination flowing again)
  • Freewrite (I have tried this, and found it a great way to jot down ideas for other stories
  • Listen to music (I wish this worked for me, I tend to find myself dancing around the room and singing at the top of my lungs as if my life depended upon it - trust me, not a good idea, but that does not mean it won't work for you).
So the next time you find yourself sitting in front of your computer, clumps of hair in your clenched fists and face beet red with temper having been visited with the dreaded curse...STOP...TAKE A DEEP BREATH...AND STEP AWAY (but just to get a breath of fresh air).

It happens...even the best have suffered it at some stage (even if they don't admit it), you're in good company my friend.

It is more fun in pairs....note to my fellow authors.

I watched a very informative video today which highlighted something I had already noticed. Having a Facebook author page no longer works. In the past few weeks, Facebook has yet again changed not only its T&C's but it has changed its algorithms too. 1) T&C's - you can no longer do the "share for a chance to ..." etc as it now goes against them. FB now wants your page content driven to attract follower interaction and it will only show your posts to those who are interactive with your page. 2) The new algorithm now only shows your content to those people unless you have PAID for advertising. So, long story short (hard to do when you are Irish lol), this video made a suggestion that made sense to me. Do away with your author page. For now, is stagnant and will grow to be a weight and chore rather than a pleasure to post on. Instead, create a group. Either do it solo or pair up with an author in the same genre and become interactive with your readers, become accessible. I have had the pleasure of being a member of Nikki Landis Author's group and I have watched it grow as she interacts with her readership and makes it fun to be one of her fans (YES! I am a huge fan of this fantastic lady and her work). This is rewarding to not just the reader, but the author too. You will be posting what you would have on your author page, but you will have that one on one interaction with your fanbase that your current Facebook author page is lacking due to their algorithms. So, on that note, I will be teaming up with one author in my genre (contemporary fantasy/urban fantasy) and starting a group so that we can connect with our readers. If you want to join I will be posting a link here in the coming days to that group.

Primals - hunky men, shifters galore...what more could you want?

Primals: Reverse Harem Paranormal Shifter Romance (Reverse Harem Series Book 1)Primals: Reverse Harem Paranormal Shifter Romance by Lexy Timms
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

PLOT: 3.5 out of 5
CHARACTERS: 4 out of 5
WORLD BUILDING: 4 out of 5
FLOW: 3.5 out of 5
Overall I decided on 4 stars and here is why...

I think I will get what I didn't like about this book out of the way first. This book is written in first person point of view and in the present tense and as a personal preference, I don't normally pick a book to read that is this way. I find the present tense very jarring and this type of POV for me fails for most authors who try it. But like I said this is entirely personal preference and many others will not mind this at all (hence the 3.5 out of 5 for FLOW). I rated the plot as 3.5 out of 5 also as although Clarissa had multiple love interest I did not feel that this met the specifics of a RH novel and the ending reinforced this for me (can't elaborate, I don't do spoilers lol sorry). Overall the guys are written quite well and I will admit to loving Sebastian a little but her reaction to the guys and situations seemed a little childish at times.

NOW...the bits I DID enjoy!

One of the things I loved about this book was the alternating points of view. I really felt that it added depth to the novel and gave a greater understanding of the world of Primals and their varying gene pools. The guys each had their own unique character quirks and this was great to see. The bones of the story was what captured me and convinced me to buy this book and take a chance on a new author (well new to me at least lol) and I have to say that although there were some issues for me I think...no, I know if the author was to change the POV to at least 1st person past tense or present I will follow this series to its conclusion. My favorite part of the book was the start as it is action-packed and well described. I could picture it as if I was sitting next to Clarrisa (which when you read it you will see why I am glad I actually wasn't lol).

If you pick this book because it is labeled RH you might be a little disappointed, BUT if you want a thrilling read that is action from start to finish and love PNR then this is the book for you.

STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING! Now available Nikki Landis' new book, Sins of the Father!

Sins of the Father (Ravage Riders MC #1)Sins of the Father by Nikki Landis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

PLOT: 5 / 5
FLOW: 5 / 5

I want to explain why I have rated this book so highly. Usually books like this are what I call surface suffers. They have wonderful characters, great plot lines, and amazing world building and yet they do the minimum to draw the reader in, they give just enough to tell the story but they do not go the extra mile to really connect you with the book...surface suffers.

The characters in this book are amazing. From Pete "Edge" and Rae, and their obvious love for each other to RJ, the best friend who is never far from the two sweethearts. The characters all knit nicely together and what comes from it is a well crafted, beautifully scripted, and well-polished piece of work. I have always believed that with great characters a great story can be told and that is exactly what the author has done here. Flow is steady, it moves without drag, without falter, and it takes you on a ride that you will not only love, but you will be begging for more.

Pete's world is tough, and he makes no excuses for it or his part in it. Rae is an innocent girl caught unknowingly in a world of gangs, violence, and lust. As the story unfolds and things take a strange turn Pete has to make a decision, one that could save Rae but cost him dearly. I hate spoilers...so I won't go on, but this story pulls you in, gently holds you and when it has you in its grasp it grips you tight, squeezes and wrings you dry. This fantastic novel archives what many stories fall flat trying to do, it makes you feel.

Nikki Landis has done a fantastic job with this book, and I only wish she had the next in the series out already so that I could continue to feed my new addiction...MMRC and Sins of the Father.

Let me give you a few suggestions...

If you are not a lover of stand-alone novels and prefer sinking your teeth into a series then maybe consider this sweet Reverse Harem series by Cecilia Randell called The Adventures of Blue Faust...

(Book 3 in the series available for pre-order)
